This nationally recognised qualification is for students who wish to develop proficiency as a veterinary nurse. Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing encompasses a total of 21 units of study and provides training in practical and technical skills relevant to the care and nursing of animals, and the underpinning knowledge required to apply those skills in a variety of workplace situations.

The course begins with animal care basics such as hygiene, nutrition, first aid, preventative health care and veterinary reception skills. Students then move onto more advanced studies including surgical nursing, medical nursing, radiography, pathology, anaesthesia, dentistry and reproduction.

Veterinary nurses wanting to update their skills can also enrol into individual units and complete them via distance education.

Traineeships are also available for veterinary nursing students. Further details, including eligibility criteria, can also be obtained from the Animal Industries Resource Centre.

Elective units

Students need to select several elective units in order to complete their Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing. This enables students to choose areas of interest including grooming, animal behaviour and practice management.
