Course Overview

Are you passionate about the care of animals and looking to gain some fundamental knowledge before embarking on a higher qualification? If so, ACM10121 Certificate I in Animal Care Industry Pathways is an ideal introduction to this industry.

This course is a prevocational, nationally recognised qualification, allowing flexibility in learning and assessment. One of the units within this qualification can be used towards the Certificate II in Animal Studies qualification in the Animal Care and Management Training Package (ACM).

Delivery Information

ACM10121 Certificate I in Animal Care Industry Pathways is conducted as a self-paced online course. You will have access to the course for a period of six (6) months. You are required to complete activities and assessments online (including multiple choice questions and submitting video of performing practical tasks). Animal care work placement or employment is required for some units in this course.

Units of Study

A total of 7 units must be completed consisting of 4 core units and 3 elective units.

These units cover gaining employment in the industry and how to  work safely and perform essential tasks common to all sectors

  • ACMGEN101 Explore job opportunities in animal care and related industries (Core)
    • Investigate work activities undertaken by a range of animal care and management facilities and/or services, and to explore employment opportunities.
  • ACMGEN102 Approach and handle a range of calm animals (Core)
    • Covers approaching and handling calm animals under supervision. It includes understanding potential hazards and risks when interacting with animals, and the application of industry guidelines and procedures to ensure the welfare and safety of the individual and the animal.
  • ACMGEN103 Assist in the care of animals (Core)
    • Covers provide basic care of calm animals. It includes awareness of potential hazards and associated risks when working with and around animals.
  • ACMWHS201 Participate in workplace health and safety processes (Core)
    • Covers the skills and knowledge required to work safely and participate in work health and safety processes in an animal care environment.

These units cover some of the essential core skills valued by employers and that are required to enter the workforce or further vocational pathways.

  • FSKOCM002 Engage in short and simple spoken exchanges at work (Core)
    • Covers skills and knowledge required to interact with others in short and simple spoken exchanges at work. For example, following simple instructions, asking or responding to simple questions, engaging in informal exchanges with colleagues, leaving a short telephone message, or describing a routine task.
  • FSKDIG001 Use digital technology for short and basic workplace tasks (Elective)
    • Covers skills and knowledge required to use digital technology to undertake short and basic workplace tasks under supervision, such as operating machinery with computerised settings, sending an electronic messages, entering information into a word processor, completing work attendance records online, using access codes, and reading gauges, scales and meters.
  • FSKNUM004 Use basic and familiar metric measurements for work (Elective)
    • Covers skills and knowledge to use basic and familiar metric measurements and quantities in simple workplace tasks and texts. It includes locating and recognising measurement information, performing simple mathematical processes with measurements and communicating simple measurement information.This course is a prevocational, nationally recognised qualification, allowing flexibility in learning and assessment.

Anyone interested in gaining a nationally recognised qualification as a stepping stone to finding a career in the Animal Care industry (e.g. veterinary nurse or an animal attendant at a pet shop, welfare establishment, grooming parlour, kennel or cattery).

There is no specific pre-requisite knowledge required for entry, however it is recommended that you:

  • Have completed Year 10 or be a mature aged student
  • Have arranged practical placement at an animal care workplace
  • Access to handling and feeding a range of animals
  • Reliable internet access, ability to film yourself for assessments and an email address. This course is purely online

This course is not eligible for Australian Government Traineeships or Incentives.
